DRC Ebola Cases Pass 2,000

The number of cases of Ebola recorded in the DRC has now passed the 2,000 mark, according to the country’s ministry of health. The outbreak, which began in August 2018, has killed around two-thirds of those infected.

While it has not spread beyond DRC’s borders, efforts to contain the outbreak have been hampered by attacks on treatment centres and the activities of armed groups in the affected regions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also struggled to secure community trust in tackling the outbreak, meaning that those with symptoms do not also go to treatment centres and continue to spread the disease.

Around 10 new cases are now being reported daily, an increase on initial figures.
