Ebola Cases On The Increase
The number of recorded new cases of Ebola in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) appears to be on the rise, with a one-day record of 27 new cases recorded last Sunday.
A total of 126 new cases were recorded last week, the highest number during the current outbreak that is estimated to have killed at least 891 to date.
Last month the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is spreading more quickly than before. WHO had previously projected that the outbreak could be brought to an end by September based on signs that cases appeared to be contained and following a reduction in the number of new cases.
Efforts to combat the disease continue to suffer obstacles as a result of militia violence, with five Ebola centres coming under attack in the past two months and a senior WHO official recently killed by militiamen.
