World Bank To Provide $22.5 billion For Climate in Africa
The World Bank has committed to providing $22.5 billion to support climate adaptation and mitigation in Africa between 2021 and 2025.
The Bank made the announcement as the One Planet Summit took place in Nairobi, Kenya, this week. The World Bank was represented at the event by Interim President of the World Bank Group Kristalina Georgieva, who convened the event alongside President Kenyatta of Kenya, President Macron of France and the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Amina Mohammed.
“People across Africa are already experiencing the growing impacts of climate change. This region is particularly vulnerable to increasing floods, droughts and destruction storms,” Georgieva stated.
The funding forms part of the World Bank’s 2025 targets to step up Climate Action, with the Bank also carrying out Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) engagements with Rwanda and Kenya, in collaboration with Germany’s BMZ.
