The tournament is organized by the Confederation of African Football and sees eight teams fight it out for qualification for the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, securing their place at the World Cup.

Tanzania, Morocco, Senegal, Guinea, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda and Angola have all qualified for the tournament. Nigeria has won the title on two previous occasions, in 2001 and 2007. However, the defending champions Mali did not qualify for the 2019 edition.
