Kenyan Says Goodbye to Olympian Daniel Rudisha
Famous Kenyan athlete Daniel Matasi Rudisha passed away this week at the War Memorial Hospital in Kakuru, Kenya, following a heart attack.
During the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City Rudisha took the silver medal, as well as participating as part of the 400-metre relay team. After he retired he served as a coach and teacher.
His son, David, is an Olympic 800 metre champion and world record holder of the same distance. David described his father as his “hero and the man behind my athletics success.”
Speaking on Rudisha’s passing Barnabas Korir of Athletics Kenya stated, "Rudisha will always be remembered as a legend and the pioneer athletes who set the foundation for the current crop of athletes. Rudisha alongside Hezekiah Nyamao, Charles Asati and the late Naftali Bon placed Kenya firmly on the global athletics map in 1968 when they struck silver in the 4x400 metres relay at the Mexico Olympic Games."
