Bank of Uganda Officials Arrested

Eight officials have been arrested as part of an investigation into the Bank of Uganda conducted by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit. The investigation was prompted by an invitation from the Governor of the Bank after an anomaly in the inventory of a consignment belonging to the central bank was identified.

The arrests have been made on the basis of suspected procurement irregularities, with those arrested including directors in charge of currency, procurement and security, as well as officials from the Customs Department, airport police officers and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) staff.

Government has dismissed reports that currency was printed without authorisation, describing them as rumours. However, police have said they are investigating the allegations and this week raided the homes of six senior bank officials.
