Sudan’s Former President Faces Corruption Charges
Sudan’s former President of 30 years, Omar al-Bashir, has been brought before the prosecutor to face corruption charges.
Bashir has been detained in Kober prison, in the capital of Khartoum, since he was deposed by a military coup in April of this year that was prompted by a wave of popular protests calling for his resignation.
Shortly after he was deposed the military uncovered around $100 million in cash at Bashir’s home. The former president faces charges of possessing foreign currency, corruption and receiving gifts illegally, and has also been charged with involvement in killing protestors.
The ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) has rejected calls to transfer Bashir to The Hague, where he is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in relation to allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.
