Sudan Negotiates Civilian Transition
The governing military council in Sudan and the Alliance for Freedom and Change are on Monday meeting to discuss plans for a transition to civilian rule.
The military took power when it removed former President Omar al-Bashir from power. However, protestors have demanded that civilians oversee the path to elections and have criticised the Council for its perceived closeness to the former president.
Discussions are expected to centre on the composition of a proposed council to replace the military one currently in place. However, generals and representatives of the Alliance for Freedom and Change are yet to come close to agreement on the allocation of positions.
Talks had previously been expected over the weekend but were postponed until Monday.
The African Union last month gave the military council three months to return to civilian rule, extending a 15 day deadline previously issued on April 11.
