AU Gives Sudan Military Council 60 Days To Handover Power
The African Union (AU) continues to apply pressure on Sudan’s Transitional Military Council to transfer power to a civilian-led authority. The AU has given the Council 60 days to make the transition, having previously set a timeline of just 15 days. The AU has indicated that the 60 day period is a final extension.
Protestors in the country have continued to call for a civilian-led council to be charged with the process of overseeing the transition following the removal of President Omar al-Bashir from office last month.
Discussions between opposition and the military have been negotiating a joint council that would be composed on both civilian representatives and military representations to replace the current 10-member military council. However, there is considerable disagreement with regards to the division of positions.
