President Magufuli Confirms Willingness To Leave Office

Tanzanian President Magufuli has this week confirmed his willingness to leave office once his tenure is complete.

According to the constitution he is limited to two-terms in office. Should he secure re-election in polls scheduled for 2020 he will be entitled to remain in office until 2025 but has made it clear that he does not intend to stay in office a day beyond the limit.

His comments come as several other leaders in the region have continued in office. Term limits have been subject to constitutional amendment in Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda, while in the Democratic Republic of Congo former President Joseph Kabila stepped aside earlier this year following elections, however his departure from office was overdue by two years.
