Uganda’s Bobi Wine Under House Arrest

Uganda MP Robert Kyagulanyi, aka musician Bobi Wine, has been placed under house arrest in Kampala. The police have described the move as a preventative measure after Kyagulanyi stated that he would not be silenced.

Police spokesman Fred Enanga is quoted by AFP as stating that Kyagulanyi “planned to disrupt public order”, and that officers would continue to hold their position outside of his home until further notice.

The opposition MP recently announced his interest in contesting the next presidential elections expected in 2021. Police have since cancelled one of his concerts scheduled for Monday and used tear gas to disperse his supporters.

Meanwhile, the United States has criticised the Government for its heavy-handed approach to opposition, with the US embassy in Kampala stating, "Strong leaders and states do not stifle speech -- they allow their citizens to participate fully and without fear in a vibrant multi-party democracy."
