Sudanese Protests Accelerate, Talks With Military End
For weeks there have been demands for civilian rule and deep institutional change. Protests in Khartoum gave brought the city to a halt, however demonstrators have said they are now breaking off talks with the ruling military council and will stage sit ins until their aims are met.
The demonstrators had successfully forced military leaders to oust former President al-Bashir and have him indicated for war crimes. However, the military have recently received aid worth $3 billion from Saudi Arabia and the UAE and have subsequently halted any meaningful commitment to democratic elections.
Sunday night at a press conference originally called by the Forces of the Declaration of Freedom and Change to announce a committee to lead transition talks with the country's military rulers, speakers instead broke off negotiations, as crowds chanted, "We don't want Saudi Arabia."
