Kenya Seeks UN Security Council Seat

Kenya is lobbying for a seat on the UN Security Council ahead of the official launch of its bid in June, with President Kenyatta among the officials seeking to  canvass support from fellow African Union members.

Kenya has positioned its bid as being an important move in supporting the focus on issues affecting the developing world, notably climate changes and regional security.

The UN Security Council is composed of five permanent members along with ten non-permanent members, each of which serve two years. Africa is entitled to two of the ten seats, with a decision expected in September of this year as the UN General Assembly holds its annual gathering in New York.

Kenya previously served as a non-permanent member in 1973 and 1997.
