Tanzania Drops 25 Places In Press Freedom Report
Tanzania has dropped 25 places in the latest World Press Freedom Index Report. The Report was published on April 18th by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Tanzania was placed 118th of 180 countries they studied, in 2018 it stood at 93.
Unsurprisingly the government’s Information Services Director told reporters that ‘You can’t come up with such a report by merely looking at incidents taking place in the society or by considering the arrest of members of Committee to Protect Journalists’
He denied there was any real problem and said the government would continue to respect free of press because it was enshrined in the country’s constitution, laws and treaties.
The Media Council of Tanzania said the drop was due to unprecedented suppression of media freedom, including banning and fining media houses, in addition there have been reports of disappearances of media practitioners.
