Ugandan Opposition Say Government Cannot Finance 2021 Polls

Ugandan opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye claims that the Government cannot afford the next general elections scheduled for 2021.

Besigye has run for the presidency on four occasions and is the leader of the Forum for Democratic Change.

“Those who say they are coming to contest in 2021, I do not think even if we do not disturb them [with Opposition activities], that they can hold an election. 2021 will not be there,” Besigye stated publicly this weekend.

His claims follow a statement by the country’s Auditor General John Muwanga who revealed that public debt increased by 22 per cent between 2017 and 2018.

Besigye warned that finances could be used as an excuse to push back the date of elections to 2023.

The ruling NRM MPs have already endorsed President Museveni as their sole candidate for the contest, while opposition actors MP Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), Democratic Party leader Norbert Mao, Maureen Kyalya and Dr Dan Okello, have also declared their interest.
