Tanzania’s Tundu Lissu to Return to Tanzania for Elections

Opposition politician Tundu Lissu is shortly expected to return to Tanzania ahead of elections next year.

Lissu, who was shot outside the National Assembly in Dodoma in 2017, is expected to challenge President Magufuli in the upcoming polls. He has described the incident as an assassination attempt.

Before his return to Tanzania Lissu is embarking on a world tour to raise awareness of the attack and he is currently waiting on medical sign off to fly home.

From his temporary residence in Belgium he continues to critique the government, last week appearing on the BBC’s Hard Talk in which he attacked President Magufuli’s track record on human rights.

Lissu may be stripped of his parliamentary seat before he returns, however, as the Speaker of the National Assembly Job Ndugai has threatened to declare his seat vacant due to his absenteeism. A debate on whether or not to strip him of his seat is expected in parliament next week.
