$10bn Port Project Stalls in Tanzania

Plans have stalled following a 2013 framework agreement between Tanzania and China Merchants Holdings International for the creation of a port and special economic zone.

The Director General of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has expressed concern regarding the terms of the investment, describing the conditions the Chinese firm are looking to impose as “commercially unviable.”

However, the government has indicated its willingness to resume talks and to negotiate a compromise.

The project is not the only one facing delays, with the Bagamoyo port also at a hiatus.
