Mozambique Hosts Blue Economy Conference
Various heads of state, government officials and representatives of civil society are congregating in Maputo, Mozambique, as part of the ‘Growing Blue’ international blue economy conference.
The conference is taking place at the Joaquim Chissano Conference Centre and will feature an opening address by President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi. Supported by Norway, among other development partners, it is expected to become a biennial event focused on the importance of seas, oceans and coastal areas.
A recent report suggests that developing ocean-based resources could deliver great economic benefit to the region.
The development of fisheries, aquaculture, coastal tourism, transport and ports, mining and energy are among activities that could generate U.S. $20.8 billion a year for the 220 million people of the western Indian Ocean region.
