Strikes Hit Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)

As politicians debate the prospect of a merger between struggling national airline Kenya Airways (KQ) and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has been hit by strikes.

Members of the 10,000-strong Kenya Aviation Workers Union (Kawu) are protesting against unfair hiring practices, poor remuneration and the proposed takeover. The Kawu have stated their intention to continue with the strike until the managers of KQ and the KAA are dismissed.

Disruptions have resulted and Kenya Airways has advised passengers to await further communication regarding their flights. Some routes continue to operate.
