Ethiopia cancels all football competitions
Ethiopia has become the latest country to cancel all domestic football for the rest of the season due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The Ethiopian Football Federation made the decision following a discussion with all relevant parties, including the Ethiopian Premier League.
The federation’s executive committee released a statement saying they had reached their decision “[c]onsidering the country is under a state of emergency and the unpredictability of the coronavirus outbreak”.
140 positive cases of the virus have so far been recorded there.
The cancellation means the season is null and void, so no teams will be relegated or promoted, and no Ethiopian teams will qualify for next year’s CAF Champions League or CAF Confederations Cup.
Fasil Kenema were top of the league with 30 points from 17 matches, and last year’s champions, Mekele 70 Enderta, were one point behind in second place.
The federation has also decided that teams should keep players whose contract come to an end by 30 June 2020.
