UN Launches Aid Appeal As Battles Fuel 'Epic Suffering' in Sudan

The United Nations and its partners have appealed for a combined US$4.1 billion to meet the most urgent humanitarian needs of civilians in war-torn Sudan and those who have fled to neighbouring countries.

Since fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has spread to Sudan's breadbasket in the south-east, food security in the country became more insecure, according to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET).

Both forces are products of the regime of Omar al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan for thirty years, from 1989 to 2019, before he was ousted.

Sudan now has the highest rate of internal displacement in the world, even surpassing Syria's 7.2 million.
