Tanzania opposition leader appears in court

Tanzania’s main opposition party leader Freeman Mbowe and his three co-accused have been brought before a court in Dar es Salaam.

The accused arrived at the Kisutu Magistrates Court at around 08:00 local time in a prison bus escorted by armed prison guards in two open-topped vehicles.

It came after the court postponed a virtual hearing on Thursday after facing technical difficulties.

Mr Mbowe, who faces terrorism charges, had been expected to follow the proceedings online.

Police dispersed and arrested some of his supporters who had turned out on the street to support him.
