Sudan police disperse pro-military protests

By Mary Harper

Police have fired teargas to disperse supporters of the Sudanese military who had gathered for a third day of protests in the capital, Khartoum.

They are calling for the transitional government to be replaced by the military, which they say will be better at dealing with the political and economic crisis.

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok held an emergency cabinet meeting, describing the unrest as the most dangerous crisis since the overthrow two years ago of long-serving President Omar al-Bashir.

Critics say the protests are being organised by the security forces who want to disrupt the transition to civilian rule.
