South Sudan Military Kills Rebel Leader
South Sudanese businessman and rebel leader, Captain Kerbino Wol was killed on Sunday at the end of a four-day military operation.
Captain Wol had been the chairman of the 7th October Movement, an organisation which had only been founded a week earlier on 5th June 2020. The movement was named as such after the date Captain Wol had supposedly led a riot in the Blue House jail back in 2018.
He had been released from prison in January of this year.
Army spokesperson, Major General Lul Ruai said of the operation, "Wol has been engaging our forces... for the last four days. We have been fighting him from 11th and yesterday [Sunday] was the success of our operations.
"He died with two other fighters, including a local youth leader who had been hosting him in his house."
The fighting took place in Ayen Mayar village (Captain Wol’s hideout) in Rumbek East County of Lakes State.
Captain Wol’s brother, Lazaro Akoon took to Facebook to mourn the passing of his brother, writing “He was one of us and to us, his body shall return. We appeal to the government as a family to have his body given to us for burial”.
Other political figures have paid tribute to the rebel leader, as the now-exiled former politician Wol Deng Atak mourned the loss of a young political figure.
He said, “His death is a great loss to the nation”.
“His decision to fight against the government resulted from the frustration of lack of justice to him as a person and for his country.”
