Burundi’s election campaign turns violent
Burundi’s Attorney General, Sylvestre Nyandwi, has urged politicians not to incite violence amongst their supporters, following clashes between government loyalists and those backing the opposition.
At least two people have already been killed, as the country witnesses’ various attacks across the country in the runup to the vote in two weeks’ time.
Human Rights Watch, an international advocacy group, says there has been a consistent and systematic campaign against both the media and opposition.
While the rest of the region has imposed restrictive measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus, large political rallies have taken place across Burundi.
There are fears the election will put the country at risk of a heavy spike in the number of Covid-19 cases.
