AU and UN raise concerns over election in Burundi

The African Union and the United Nations have both expressed concerns over clashes between opposition groups and those that support the government ahead of Wednesday’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

They have made an appeal to all sides to refrain from violence and urged security forces to ensure the election is conducted in a free and safe manner.

Human rights groups say close to 150 opposition members have been arrested in Burundi since the start of the election campaign three weeks ago.

While the current president, Pierre Nkurunziza, is not seeking re-election, it is thought he will remain politically powerful through the ruling party’s chosen successor, General Evariste Ndayishimye.

Parliament passed legislation declaring Nkurunziza “supreme guide to patriotism” after he steps down from office.
