DRC: President replaces chief of staff accused of corruption
The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Felix Tshisekedi, has replaced his chief of staff who stands accused of misappropriating state funds.
Vital Kamerhe, a central figure in the DRC whose party provided key support to Mr Tshisekedi during the 2018 election, is facing trial over the embezzlement of $50m intended for an infrastructure project to commemorate the first 100 days of the president in office.
He maintains his innocence.
During an announcement on state television on Tuesday, the president’s spokesperson revealed his former deputy, Désiré Cashmir Kolongele, would succeed him.
Mr Kamerhe is currently being held in a prison in the capital, Kinshasa, where he has been since 8 April.
His repeated requests for bail have been denied.
Supporters of his party, Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC) say the charges are politically motivated.
