Student seeks $1.6m for Museveni Twitter block
A Ugandan student studying at Harvard University is seeking $1.6m in compensation from the President, Yoweri Museveni, for blocking him on Twitter.
Hilary Innocent Seguya is suing both the president and other senior government ministers to unblock him on the social media platform.
He wants financial compensation for the “mental anguish” caused by the actions of the president and ministers on Twitter, according to Uganda’s New Vision newspaper.
The student argues the decision to block him on Twitter unfairly discriminates against him, as a Ugandan living abroad has the right to get information from government official’s Twitter handles.
The state has asked the court to dismiss the case because it lacked merit.
The court will read its findings on 20 May.
