Kenyan MP accused of shooting to remain in custody
Paul Ongili, the controversial Kenyan opposition MP, is to remain in custody pending a bail hearing next week, after he pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges following the shooting of a DJ in a nightclub in the capital, Nairobi.
Ongili, also known as Babu Owino, was arrested last week after he allegedly shot DJ Evolve at a nightclub.
Prosecutors asked not the court not to release the legislator over fears he would intimidate and interfere with witnesses.
DJ Evolve, real name Felix Orinda, is recovering in hospital following surgery to remove a bullet found in his neck.
A video purporting to show the shooting has been widely shared on online, provoking outrage amongst members of the public, many of whom have expressed concerns over the country’s perceived descent into lawlessness.
Kenyan police have subsequently announced they will no longer provide VIP security to state officials implicated in crimes until they have been cleared in court.
Those accused of crimes would also have their firearms licences revoked and their weapons confiscated.
