Sudanese Protestors Resume Negotiations With Military

Protest leaders in Sudan have resumed negotiations with the ruling Transitional Military Council.

The development comes after mediators from the African Union (AU) and Ethiopia have sought to bring the parties back to the table after talks collapsed early in June. The two sides are at odds over the composition of an interim governing body to oversee the path to elections.

Relations deteriorated further following violence on June 3 when security forces dispersed protestors conducting a sit-in outside the military’s headquarters. Scores were left dead.

The decision by the Alliance for Freedom and Change to return to the negotiation table was announced on Wednesday. It follows an agreement by the military council to a joint AU-Ethiopia proposal for the resumption of talks last week and further mass protests over the weekend.
