President Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is on a two-day state visit to Tanzania. Having arrived Thursday Tshisekedi met with his Tanzanian counterpart President Magufuli to discuss a range of issues, including the continued presence of Tanzanian peacekeepers in the DRC as part of the United Nations Organization’s Stabilization Mission (Monusco).
President Magufuli confirmed that despite losses Tanzania would maintain its involvement, as well as praising some of President Tshisekedi’s recent efforts to reduce tensions. In turn President Tshisekedi praised the contribution of the Tanzanian peacekeepers in tackling the situation.
Commenting on the importance of peace and stability to the region President Magufuli stated, "Tanzania is supporting the peace efforts because not only would the country be assured of peace and stability; peace would also stimulate economic development among the African Great Lakes countries - and the African continent in general."
Economic and trade matters were also discussed, with President Tshisekedi raising the possibility of extending the Dar es Salaam port linked Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project to the DRC. He also confirmed that the DRC has applied to become a member of the East African Community in a bid to boost trade and economic activity within the region.
