Sudanese Protestors Teargased
Police in Khartoum, Sudan, used tear gas to break up protests in the capital this weekend as demonstrators to part in a civil disobedience campaign calling for a transition to civilian rule.
The demonstrations were led by the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), who called for the move after talks between protestors and the military broke down last week following an incident in which it is alleged that more than 100 protestors were killed as security forces broke up a sit-in outside the army headquarters.
The military has stated its intention to hold elections within nine months. However, the SPA among other groups remain concerned that free and fair elections cannot be held in such a short time period, overseen by the military council.
The African Union last week suspended Sudan’s membership of the body.
