DRC Appoints Prime Minister

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has a new prime minister, Sylvestre Ilunga Ilukamba. Determining the new appointment has been a lengthy process with recently elected President Tshisekedi having to agree on a choice with former President Joseph Kabila’s whose party has a majority in parliament.

Ilukamba is seen as an ally of the former President and previously served as head of the national rail company, the SNCC.

Earlier this week opposition politician Moise Katumbi returned to the country following three years in exile after fraud charges against him were dropped by the Tshisekedi administration.

Katumbi had previously announced his intention to contest the 2018 elections, which were delayed from their scheduled date in 2016, however, he was unable to register his candidacy after being denied entry into the country last year.
