Ugandan Government Issues Famine Warning
The Government of Uganda has issued a famine warning affecting most parts of the country. In preparation the authorities are advising traders to limit food exports and families to ration food supplies.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture the delay to rains means that shortages are expected. While the government meteorological agency had forecast rain for the month, fall has been limited to date. The executive director of the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA)) Festus Luboyera has attributed the change in outlook to cyclone Idai.
Speaking to media Minister Christopher Kibanzanga said that the government is committed to supporting irrigation schemes to reduce reliance on rain-fed agriculture.
