Uganda’s Bobi Wine Arrested

Musician-turned-opposition politician Bob Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi MP, has been arrested and placed in custody along with four others including his brother and bodyguard.

His arrest comes after a house arrest on the politician ended on Thursday of last week.

The arrest is understood to be in connection with a protest organised last year following the introduction of a two shilling phone tax on social media access. The state claims that Kyagulanyi failed to notify the police regarding the demonstration, as well as that he refused to cooperate to ensure participants were unarmed and peaceful.

Police detained Kyagulanyi Monday, when he answered a summons to the Criminal Investigations Directorate. He denies the allegations.

Kyagulanyi was previously detained last year and charged with treason following an alleged altercation between his supporters and the presidential motorcade. The charges were later dropped.
