Sudanese Generals Quit As Pressure Mounts
Three officers in Sudan’s Transitional Military Council have offered to quit their posts as protests in the country continue. Protestors have continued to demonstrate in the country’s capital, Khartoum, following the departure of President Omar al-Bashir from office, calling for the transition to be led by a civilian administration. Members of the Council have also been criticised for their close links to the former president.
According to military spokesman Lt-Gen Shamseddine Kabbashi the Council and protestors have agreed that generals Omar Zain al-Abideen, Jalal al-Deen al-Sheikh and Al-Tayeb Babakr Ali Fadeel will step aside, as well as to the set up of a joint committee to decide on outstanding issues.
The African Union has given the Council three months to implement democratic reforms, extended from a previous 15-day deadline. If the Council fails to adhere to the timeline Sudan could face suspension from the body.
