Police Disperse Student Protestors With Teargas, Bullets
In Uganda the police have used teargas and bullets to disperse striking students at Kyambogo University.
The students were protesting the fees policy, which requires them to have cleared their tuition fees by the 12th week of the semester or they could face withdrawal.
"Any student who will not have fully paid by the above date will be levied a surcharge of Shs5,000 in addition to the required fees in which case, all outstanding fees shall be settled by the 12th week, that's, March 31, 2019. Any student who shall not have paid all the required fees within the university schedule above, shall automatically be considered for a temporary withdrawal (dead semester)," according to a statement from the university bursar.
Students are also unable to sit examinations if they have not paid in full.
Students have described the policy as being unfair and not allowing enough time for the fees to be paid.
