Kenyan MPs Question Funds For Kenya-Somalia Border Wall
Members of the National Assembly in Kenya have questioned the use of funds to construct a wall between the country and neighbouring Somalia.
The wall was conceived of as a measure to reduce the threat posed by Al-Shabaab terrorists operating in the region, helping the authorities to better regulate movement between the two countries. However, its efficacy has been called into question by legislators. As such the MPs have called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to examine the expenditure of Sh 3.4 billion on 10 kilometres of wall.
The calls comes as the Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations submitted its report on the endeavour and called on government to speed up implementation of the project to cover the 700 kilometer border.
Speaking on the matter Fafi MP Abdihakim Osman stated, "This is a white elephant and in a few days to come, Kenyans will be making noise over how funds have been misused because the project makes no sense. Another National Youth Service (NYS) is happening ... we are not going to allow this."
