Lowassa Praises President Magufuli As He Returns To CCM

Tanzania’s former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa earlier this month announced his return to the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party ahead of next year’s general elections expected in October.

Lowassa departed the party after he failed to secure his selection as the CCM’s flag bearer for the 2015 elections following the departure of President Kikwete.

He then joined with opposition party Chadema and was selected as the presidential candidate for the opposition coalition Ukawa, which finished second in the polls.

This weekend Lowassa was back addressing voters and voicing his support for President John Magufuli, who he credited as one of those who had convinced him to return home to CCM.  

A number of other Chadema politicians have previously defected to the ruling party.
