Conflicting Reports Over Mkapa’s Role in Burundi

Reports have surfaced that the former President of Tanzania Benjamin Mkapa has resigned as mediator for the Inter-Burundi Dialogue due to failure by the East African Community to give him necessary cooperation. However, the EAC has stated that it was simply a case of Mr Mkapa completing his tenure.

The dialogue has been ongoing for three years and during the last meeting in Arusha the Burundi government failed to send any representatives.
