Miss Curvy Uganda Contestants Storm Parliament

A group of contestants and coordinators of the recently launched Miss Curvy Uganda pageant have today stormed Parliament to demonstrate their support for the controversial initiative.

Following its launch the Miss Curvy Uganda pageant has come under criticism by various religious and civil society figures, with activists claiming the project objectifies women. However, there also appears to be considerable support for the initiative, with reports that more than 200 contestants have already signed up.

Led by Anne Mungoma, chief executive of the pageant, the group stormed Parliament around 12.30, where they appealed to Speaker Rebecca Kadaga who earlier this week had voiced her concern at the use of women’s bodies to promote tourism.

In response to the demonstration Kadaga is quoted as stating, "I misunderstood the pageant after the protest it faced from the public but now that I have understood what it’s about, it is okay. You can go ahead and organize the event.”
