Uganda Passes Minimum Wage Bill

The Ugandan parliament has this week passed the Minimum Wage Bill, 2015.

The legislation provides for the appointment of a minimum wage board that will be responsible for setting minimum wage levels across various sectors of the economy. The Gender, Labour and Social Development Minister will appoint the board.

While the private members’ bill enjoys strong support from the trade unions, it still requires approval from the President, who has objected to the move in the past on the grounds that it could deter investment.
