Uganda’s Ruling NRM Endorses President for 2021 Elections

The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has announced its endorsement of President Yoweri Museveni for the next presidential elections expected in 2021.

While the decision as to whether he will be the party’s flagbearer for the polls is still subject to input from other groups within the party it sets Museveni out as the clear favourite. If he contests the elections it will be his sixth bid for re-election during a 33 year rule.

In a CEC resolution issued following a retreat this week at Chobe Safari Lodge in the Murchison Falls National Park, Nwoya District the group stated, “To emphatically recommend to the membership of the Movement and its organs that Yoweri Museveni, our leader and General of the African resistance, continues leading the Movement in 2021 and beyond as we eliminate the bottlenecks 'to transformation'."

The determination comes after a Constitutional Amendment Bill recently removed the upper age limit for contesting the presidency of 75 years. The president is currently 74.
