Kenyan music star ‘should not bow to legal threat’, says lawyer

The lawyer for Kenyan music star King Kaka has advised his client not to give in to threats of legal action.

King Kaka’s Swahili song Wajinga Nyinyi, meaning ‘You are Fools’, has been marred by controversy for talking about a number of high-ranking officials. Specifically the song highlights government corruption.

County governor Anne Waiguru said she will sue the rapper for defamation if he does not take the video down from YouTube. The song insinuates that the governor is guilty of embezzling public funds.

But the musician’s lawyer, Nelson Havi, told the BBC that he “should not take down the video because it represents what a majority of Kenyans think”. Mr Havi is so convinced of King Kaka’s innocence that he has offered to defend the rapper for free.

Mr Havi believes that were the case to go to court, “justification is a credible claim in defamation cases... that will be the defence”.
