Seventy Tanzanian Covid patients on oxygen

For the first time in more than a year, the Tanzanian authorities have revealed some statistics about people with coronavirus.

Talking to news editors in the main city, Dar es Salaam, President Samia Suluhu Hassan said that 70 Tanzanians with coronavirus are in hospital and are being treated with the help of oxygen.

President Samia has been in power for just over 100 days.

Her predecessor, John Magufuli, who died in office in March, said a year ago that the country was free of coronavirus. Tanzania stopped releasing coronavirus figures in May last year, when it said there were 509 cases.

Speaking on Monday, President Samia emphasised that the public should adhere to measures to prevent further infections.

“Everyone should play a role in this, every family should take measures to protect itself. We have information of Covid-19 cases along the border areas,” she said.
