Which Instagram accounts should you be following?

Everyone needs a bit of light relief here and there, especially during times like these. And, with a lot of people with a lot more time on their hands, we thought we would bring together a list of our favourite accounts to follow on Instagram. Check it out.

1.     Zari Hassan @zarithebosslady

The Ugandan socialite, reality star, musician, actor (whatever you like) has one of the most wholesome accounts you’ll find on Instagram. She keeps her 7.5m followers entertained with hilarious dub smashes, funny stories and cute kid pics.

She’s also been posting makeup tutorials from her home in South Africa. Be sure to check them out on her story!

 2.     Lupita Nyong’o @lupitanyongo

Mexican-born Kenyan actor and all-round super star Lupita Nyong’o is, without doubt, one of the most loved figures in Hollywood today.

Since she launched herself out of obscurity with her breath-taking (and Oscar winning) performance as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, Nyong’o has barely put a foot wrong. She’s gone from strength-to-strength, even penning her own children’s book, Sulwe, which manages to navigate the intricacies of a mature subject-matter couched in child-friendly prose.

Her social media pages seem to follow the same format, bringing use a perhaps more sober reflection on the world within which we currently find ourselves. Be sure to check it out.

3.     Everyday Africa @everydayafrica

Armed with just an iPhone camera, Peter DiCampo and Austin Merrill started the international movement “Everyday Africa”. Their goal: photograph daily life in Africa and provide their 412,000 followers with a fresh perspective on the continent. Their subjects range from women carrying babies along a road in a suburb of Kampala, Uganda, to a taxi driver showing off his voting card during Nigeria’s elections.

 4.     Mutua Matheka @truthslinger

A scroll through Mutua Matheka’s Instagram feed reveals that the Kenyan photographer has a thing for landscapes and tall city buildings. Add to that striking portraits and shots showing Nairobi’s vibrant urban life, and you have a passionate project aimed at showcasing the Kenyan capital like you’ve never seen it before.

His images of the busy night life juxtaposed with the laid-back day-to-day activities of Nairobi’s residents allow him to capture the city’s various moods and energies.
