Uganda begins to ease lockdown restrictions

Uganda will begin the process of easing its lockdown today as motorists are allowed to return to the roads and shops and restaurants start to reopen.

It will be compulsory to wear a face mask in public, which the government will provide to everyone over the age of six for free.

The original date for easing the restrictions was delayed last week by President Museveni to give people enough time to acquire a mask.

But the president’s senior press secretary, Don Wanyama, has urged caution, reminding people that the virus is still present.

He tweeted “As you prepare to enjoy ‘freedom’ tomorrow, be notified that 10 new covid-19 cases have been confirmed today.

“Nine of those at border points, the 10th a contact to a truck driver. Country’s total now stands at 222. Please keep social distance and wear a mask as you go out”.

Restrictions are only being lifted in 95 of the 135 districts, with the 40 border districts remaining under lockdown.

Gyms and night clubs remain closed. Public transport restrictions will be eased on 4 June, the same day guidelines on the reopening of schools will be announced.
