Rwanda extends lockdown by two weeks
The Rwandan government has elected to extend the country’s lockdown by at least another two weeks.
The strict measures – permitting people to only travel outside their homes for food and medicine - were first introduced last month, on 21 March, and were due to end on 19 April.
However, following a sharp rise in the number of positive cases, the Cabinet agreed to extend the lockdown.
The number of confirmed cases in Rwanda has grown from 17 to 82 within the last two weeks, prompting this latest decision.
Rwanda’s borders have been closed during this time, allowing only the movement of essential goods in and out the country.
Citizens are also allowed to enter the country, though once inside they are not permitted to leave.
Shops, schools and places of worship will remain closed, and employees, where possible, will continue to work from home.
