Amnesty: Civilians massacred in Tigray

Rights group Amnesty International says that scores, and "likely" hundreds, of civilians were stabbed or hacked to death in a "massacre" Ethiopia's northern Tigray region on the night of 9 November.

Amnesty said it had not yet been able to confirm who was behind the killings in Mai-Kadra town, but had spoken to witnesses who blamed the attack on forces loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), apparently after they suffered defeat from federal forces.

The group added that its "Crisis Evidence Lab has examined and digitally verified gruesome photographs and videos of bodies strewn across the town or being carried away on stretchers".

The TPLF - which is in power in Tigray - has not yet commented on the allegation.

Conflict between federal and regional troops broke out in Tigray more than a week ago.

Getting information from the region is hard as roads have been blocked, the internet is down and telephone lines have been cut.
