How powerful is your passport?

Henley & Partners, a citizenship and planning company, has released the results of their research which rank the ‘power’ of each passport around the world.

By ‘power’, they mean the number of countries around the world you can visit visa-free with that particular countries’ passport.

Amongst African nations, the Seychelles remains the most powerful, and the 29th globally, granting the holder visa-free access to 151 countries around the world, followed closely by Mauritius, permitting access to 146 different countries.

South Africa is ranked 56th in the world with access to 100 countries, ahead of Botswana (84) and Namibia (76).

However, a number of African countries find themselves at the bottom of the list.

Somalia, the weakest African passport, is just 4 from last placed Afghanistan, with access to just 32 countries visa-free.

Libya (37), Sudan (39), DR Congo (41), Eritrea (41), Ethiopia (43), South Sudan (43), Djibouti (46), Nigeria (46) Congo (47), Angola (49), Burundi (49), Cameroon (49), Egypt (49), Liberia (49), and Algeria (50) all grant visa-free travel to just 50 countries or less globally.

Though it’s not all bad news, with Rwanda one of the biggest movers on the list in recent years.  Since 2010, a Rwandan passport now grants visa-free travel to an additional 20 countries, bringing the total to 59.
